Natural habitat: Native to the grasslands and semi-arid regions of Argentina, these large lizards thrive in environments with access to both sun and shade, as well as plenty of ground cover.
Recommended enclosure size and type: Adult Argentine Red Tegus require a large enclosure of at least 8x4x4 feet. PVC or wood enclosures are ideal for maintaining proper temperature and humidity. Provide deep substrate (8–12 inches) for digging and burrowing, along with sturdy hides and basking areas.
Heat gradient: Maintain a basking spot of 100-110°F, with an ambient temperature of 80-85°F. The cooler end of the enclosure should be around 75°F. A reliable heat source and UVB lighting are essential for their metabolic health.
Humidity requirements: Maintain moderate to high humidity levels of 60-80%. Use a moisture-retaining substrate, such as cypress mulch or coconut fiber, and mist the enclosure regularly to help maintain these levels.
Feeding on: Argentine Red Tegus are omnivorous. Their diet should include a mix of lean meats, eggs, insects, fruits, and vegetables. Juveniles require more protein and should be fed daily, while adults can be fed 3-4 times per week. Calcium and vitamin supplements should be provided regularly to ensure proper growth and health.
