Name / Scientific name: Ball Python (Python regius)
Natural habitat: Native to the grasslands, savannas, and forests of West and Central Africa, ball pythons thrive in warm, moderately humid environments with access to ground cover for hiding and burrowing.
Adult Size: Most ball pythons max out between 3-4 feet long, with a weight in the 2000-3000 gram range. Males typically stay a little bit smaller than females (usually).
Recommended enclosure size and type: A juvenile ball python should be housed in a small enclosure, such as a rack system or small PVC/Plastic cage, while adults typically require a 40-gallon equivalent or larger enclosure. An enclosure with secure ventilation, such as a plastic bin setup or PVC cage, works well. Provide hiding spots on both the warm and cool sides for security. We recommend rack systems especially for babies because they feel more secure, while adults can be housed in either caging or large tubs.
Heat gradient: Maintain a temperature gradient with a cool side in the mid-70s (°F) and a warm side with a basking spot at 88°F. We recommend belly heat such as heat tape or an under tank heat pad, regulated with a thermostat to prevent overheating.
Humidity requirements: Aim for a relative humidity of around 60%. Increase humidity slightly during shedding cycles by lightly misting or adding a damp hide.
Feeding on: Feed ball pythons live or frozen-thawed rodents of appropriate size, typically one every 1-2 weeks. Most ball pythons adapt easily to frozen-thawed prey if introduced gradually. Most babies will start on hopper sized mice or pinky/fuzzy rats, and the maximum size meal we give our adults is a medium rat.
