Natural habitat: Found in the southern United States, particularly in Texas, these ratsnakes inhabit forests, grasslands, and suburban areas, often near sources of water and abundant cover.
Recommended enclosure size and type: An adult Texas Ratsnake requires a PVC or wood enclosure of at least 4×2 feet, with plenty of climbing opportunities and secure hiding spots. Plastic tubs are suitable for juveniles or basic setups.
Heat gradient: Provide a basking area around 85-88°F, with a cooler side in the mid-70s. The ambient temperature should be kept in the low 80s to allow proper thermoregulation.
Humidity requirements: Texas Ratsnakes do well in moderate humidity, ideally around 40-50%. Provide a shallow water dish and mist lightly during shedding periods to maintain adequate hydration.
Feeding on: These snakes are carnivores and thrive on a diet of appropriately sized rodents. Feed juveniles every 5-7 days, while adults can be fed every 10-14 days, adjusting the schedule based on their size and body condition.
