Description
Sambawa Asian Water Monitors for sale
Name / Scientific name: Asian Water Monitor (Varanus salvator)
Natural habitat: Found throughout Southeast Asia, Asian water monitors inhabit tropical forests, swamps, and riverbanks. They are semi-aquatic and often stay near bodies of water where they can swim and hunt.
Recommended enclosure size and type: Adult Asian water monitors require very large enclosures due to their size and activity level, with at least 8x4x6 feet of space, though larger is preferred. Their enclosure should include both land and a sizable water area deep enough for swimming, as they are strong swimmers.
Heat gradient: Provide a basking spot of 105-110°F, with an ambient temperature in the mid-80s and a cooler side around 78°F. A UVB light source is vital to ensure proper calcium metabolism and overall health.
Humidity requirements: Asian water monitors need high humidity levels around 70-90%. Daily misting and a large water area help maintain the humidity. Proper ventilation is essential to prevent excess moisture buildup, which can lead to respiratory issues.
Feeding on: Asian water monitors are carnivorous and should be fed a varied diet of whole prey items such as rodents, fish, insects, and occasionally eggs. Juveniles need to be fed every 1-2 days, while adults can be fed 2-3 times per week.
