Name / Scientific name: Western Hognose Snake (Heterodon nasicus)
Natural habitat: Native to the grasslands and prairies of North America, particularly in the central United States, these snakes are adapted to dry, sandy environments with plenty of ground cover.
Recommended enclosure size and type: A PVC or wood enclosure of at least 2×1.5 feet is suitable for adults, providing plenty of floor space and substrate for burrowing. Plastic tubs are also a practical option, especially for younger snakes or smaller setups.
Heat gradient: Maintain a basking area around 85°F, with a cooler side of about room temperature.
Humidity requirements: Western Hognose Snakes prefer low humidity, ideally between 30-40%. Avoid excessive moisture, and provide a shallow water dish to support hydration without raising humidity.
Feeding on: These snakes are primarily fed appropriately sized rodents, although in the wild they also consume amphibians. Feed juveniles every 4-5 days, and adults every 7-10 days, adjusting based on body condition and growth.
